Ninja Nerds!

This lecture by Professor Zach Murphy will lecture on Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). We will discuss the following primary objectives:

1. Introduction to COPD

- Understand the epidemiology and public health significance of COPD.

- Familiarize yourself with the basic pathophysiology involving airflow obstruction and inflammation.

2. Types and Classification

- Distinguish between the two main types of COPD: Chronic Bronchitis and Emphysema.

- Learn about the GOLD classification system and how it integrates spirometry, symptoms like mMRC scores, and exacerbation history for classification.

3. Clinical Manifestations

- Recognize the hallmark symptoms of COPD, such as dyspnea, chronic cough, and sputum production.

- Learn how to utilize the mMRC Dyspnea Scale to assess symptom severity and guide management.

4. Diagnostic Criteria and Tools

- Become proficient in interpreting spirometry results, particularly the FEV1/FVC ratio.

- Understand how the mMRC scale and spirometry contribute to diagnosing and staging COPD.

- Examine the role of imaging studies like chest X-rays and CT scans.

5. Management Strategies

- Gain insights into pharmacologic treatments, including bronchodilators and anti-inflammatory agents.

- Understand how mMRC scores can influence treatment choices, such as the initiation of pulmonary rehabilitation or long-acting bronchodilators.

6. Acute Exacerbations of COPD

- Learn about managing acute exacerbations, including using corticosteroids, antibiotics, and hospitalization criteria.

- Discuss how frequent exacerbations, as indicated by a high mMRC score, may require modifications in treatment strategies.

7. Complications and Co-morbidities

- Discuss complications like respiratory failure, pneumonia, and cardiovascular diseases.

- Understand the significance of managing co-morbidities such as depression and osteoporosis in COPD patients.
